Fruit Growth FAQ
How is Fruit Growth measured?
A specialized dendrometer that cups the fruit with two arms expands with the fruit as it records and measures those subtle changes as they occur.
What does fruit growth indicate?
Rate of growth, when the ideal size is reached, an estimate of when the ideal size has been reached, of the plant is under stress.
Is there a way to “guess” when the ideal size will be reached?
Models have been developed for citrus and apples. By entering the ideal size and the date you wish to reach that size, the software will indicate how you are tracking towards that goal and if you are tracking to be larger or smaller than the target size by the specified date.
Can I use it on any fruit?
Oblong fruits such as pears, or small fruit such as almonds are not ideal for tracking using dendrometers. The best fruit to use with fruit dendrometers are citrus, apples, and stone fruit (except for cherries).
What does it mean if the value drops to 0?
Wind, heavy precipitation, or other factors can knock the dendrometer off of the fruit. When the measurement drops to 0, it is an indication that the fruit dendrometer has fallen off the fruit. Measurement can be resumed by going to the site and placing the device back on the fruit.
