Installing a Device from a Planned Node

Navigate to the planned node you wish to install in Hub. Click on the node, then click "Install."

Click on "Activate DN Trap"

Enter the Node ID

The node ID can be entered in three different ways.

  1. Scan Node will activate your phone's NFC function. Hold the back of the phone close to the side of the trap and it will read the NFC tag inside and enter the node ID into the field below.

  2. Scan QR Code will open your phone's camera. Point the camera at the QR code on the clear plastic and it will read the node ID.

  3. Manual entry can be used if preferred or if one of the other methods is not available.

Click Submit when finished, and then Continue at the bottom of the next screen.

Dropping a New Node (without a planned node)

Click on the sidebar.

Scroll down and click on "Install New Equipment."

Drag the pin to the desired location and click "Confirm."

Click "Activate Equipment."

Select the property the equipment will be installed on from the dropdown list.

Enter a name for this device, for example, "Block 22 Camera Trap."

Scan the node with either the QR scanner or NFC tag.

Click on "Configure Trap," then select the target pest and lure types. Click "Configure" in the bottom right when done.

Click "Review."

When the trap has been scanned in, insert the batteries into the sliding tray, then close it and hand-tighten the thumbscrew.

Be sure that the door is pushed all the way closed, as pictured.

If batteries are already installed, use a magnet to reset the trap.

Magnet Reset

The trap will boot and begin connecting to cell towers. While waiting for service and connection confirmation, finish preparing the trap by installing the lure and liner.

The trap will beep once when it powers on, and the status LED and buzzer will flash and beep according to the following table:

  • Blue flashing - Booting and looking for service.

  • Green flashing - Good cell signal, hang with confidence.

  • Yellow flashing - Poor cell signal, wait for solid green LED to confirm successful image transmission.

  • Red flashing - Bad or no cell signal, trap image success unlikely. Look for a better location and retry.

  • White camera LEDs flash - Trap is taking test image.

  • Green solid - Trap is connected and image sent successfully.

  • 3 quick beeps, LED turns off - Trap connection sequence complete.

  • 16 quick beeps, LED flashing red - No cell service or critical trap error.

Setting Lures and Liners

There are a wide variety of lure types on the market. The images above show how some lure types can be installed on liner cards or hung on the trap door, but are included for reference only.

Please follow the manufacturer's recommendation for placement of lures.

Hanging a Nutmeal Lure

Nutmeal lures can be hung on the inside of trap doors using a short length of wire, as pictured. In this position they are out of view of the camera, but still receive adequate airflow to attract pests. Feed the wire through the small holes in the door and through the sides of the mesh bag, then twist the wire over on itself to secure the lure.

Insert the Liner

Peel the cover paper off the liner and place the liner in the tray with the sticky side facing up.

In windy areas, it can be beneficial to secure the liner to the base of the trap with a pushpin.

Close the Coroplast Doors

Fold the edges of the liner tray up and close the coroplast doors by inserting the tabs

Attach a Tree Hook and Hang the Trap

Attach a tree hook through the center hole in the mounting rail, then hang the trap in the desired location.

Finalize the Installation

Take a picture of the installed trap for the record. Once you click Finish, Hub will start uploading the data to the server. When it is complete, the message at the top of the screen will read, "Offline synchronization completed."

The trap installation is complete.

Installation Tips

Hanging with a Pole

Trap hooks are designed to fit in the end of a hollow pole for ease of hanging in trees. Insert the long part of the hook into the pole, then hang in the desired location.

Hanging on Trellis Wire

To prevent sliding on trellis wire, a trellis adapter clip can be used. Thread the end of the hook through the holes and slide the clip into place on the hook. Bend the top of the clip up and hang on the trellis wire as pictured.

Trap Placement

Placement guidelines will vary depending on the crop and pest being targeted. For convenience, a few guidelines from UC IPM are included. Please refer to your regional IPM guidelines for recommended placement of traps.

NOW in Almonds, Pistachios

  • Hang traps in the shade, 6- to 8-feet high, 1- to 3-feet inside the canopy in the north quadrant of the tree, in the shade, and at least 5 trees from the edge of the orchard.

Apples

Stonefruit

  • OFM traps can be placed at a comfortable height for visual inspection. Avoid using outside tree rows for pheromone traps. Place OFM traps 3 to 4 rows in, at least 25 feet apart and at a density of 1 trap per ten acres.

  • Traps for CM should be hung in the upper third of the tree canopy, on the periphery of the tree with the trap entrances oriented so moths can fly through.
